Using External Web Links in Your Courses

If you create training content on external sites and want to bring that material directly into your courses, you can easily do so using the Import from Web option.

Occasionally, you may notice that the external page doesn’t display within the course and instead shows a message indicating that it cannot connect. The good news is that this is completely expected behavior for certain websites—and there’s a simple setting you can adjust to ensure your learners can access the content smoothly.

Why This Happens

Some websites use built-in security rules that prevent their pages from being displayed inside another website. When a page is embedded (for example, using an iframe within a course step), these security rules may block the content from loading.

When this occurs, you can simply choose to open the external link in a new browser tab so learners can view it without restrictions.

How to Ensure Learners Can Access Your External Content

Follow these quick steps to adjust your course settings:

Step 1: Access the Lecture Settings

  1. Open the course that includes the web-imported step.

  2. Navigate to the Course Panel and select Edit Lectures from the Lectures tab.

  3. Find the lecture.

Step 2: Enable “Open in New Tab”

  1. Locate the checkbox labeled Open in New Tab.

  2. Select the checkbox.

Your learners will now be able to open the external content seamlessly in a new tab.

How This Affects Tracking

When Open in New Tab is enabled, the platform cannot record time spent on the external content because it opens in a separate browser tab. Consequently, duration-based engagement metrics from that page will not be captured by the platform.

If this tracking behavior works for your training needs, this method offers a quick and effective way to incorporate live external content into your courses.
