Unassigning a Curriculum After Enrollment

Overview

You may find yourself in a situation where a private curriculum is initially assigned to a large group of users, but later it’s decided that the training should not be mandatory. In these cases, you might consider unassigning the curriculum while still allowing users to access it voluntarily.

This article walks you through what happens when a curriculum is unassigned, how user access is affected, and what users can expect depending on their progress.

The Scenario

You assign a curriculum to a group of users, enrolling them automatically. Afterward, you determine that the training should be optional rather than compulsory. To align with this approach, you plan to unassign the curriculum and make it public so users can continue accessing it on their own.

Before doing so, it’s important to understand how unassigning affects:

  • Users who have already started the curriculum

  • Users who have not yet started

  • Access to the curriculum moving forward

What Happens When You Unassign a Curriculum

When a curriculum is unassigned:

  • All currently enrolled users are unenrolled from the curriculum.

  • If the curriculum is set to Public, users can still access it through visible categories within the platform.

  • Unassigning the curriculum does not restrict future access, provided it remains public and is placed in a category the users can access.

Impact on Users Based on Their Progress

Here’s what users will experience depending on their status at the time of unassignment:

Users Who Have Completed the Curriculum

  • Their completion record is retained.

  • If they later choose to self-enroll again, their completed status will still be reflected.

Users Who Have Started but Not Completed the Curriculum

  • Partial progress (for example, 50% completion) is not retained after unassignment.

  • If they re-enroll, they will start the curriculum from the beginning.

Users Who Have Not Started the Curriculum

  • They will need to self-enroll in the public curriculum  to begin training.

  • No prior enrollment or progress is carried over.

Recommended Guidance

If you want to shift a curriculum from mandatory to optional:

  1. Unassign the curriculum to remove the enrollment.

  2. Set the curriculum to Public so users can still access it independently.

  3. Communicate clearly with users about what to expect, especially if they have already started but not completed the training.

  4. Consider timing the unassignment carefully to minimize disruption for users who are mid-progress.

This approach gives you flexibility while still providing learners with access to valuable training content.
