When a learner is enrolled in a course or learning path, there are two ways to make sure the training automatically gets reassigned to the learner:
1. If the training has a certificate with an expiration date, you can set it so that the training gets automatically reassigned upon expiration of the certificate.
2. You can set up a reassignment rule (oblige to retake) that will automatically reassign the training. Read Oblige to Retake Options for more details on this.
Both of these options can be set up at the same time. The rule that will execute first is the one that will work for the learner.
Example:
Let's say you have a certificate that expires in six months, and automatically reassigns the training a month for expiration, and a reassignment rule that reassigns the training a year month after enrollment.
If the learner completes the training within the first seven months, the certificate expiration (five months) will reassign the learner first, resetting the enrollment date. If the learner doesn't complete the training in that time, it will reassign when the year since enrollment is up.
The difference:
Reassignment rules work for all learners, whether they have a certificate or not. The certification rules only affect learners with an active certificate.
If a learner with a certificate gets reassigned through the reassignment rule, the certificate will be reset. If it gets reset due to certificate expirations, the certificate will stay valid for sixty more days. The latter is usually used with compliance courses, so that the course can be reassigned and the process gets reset before the certificate officially expires, but the learner will still be in compliance.
Note: This article uses our updated vocabulary. Oblige to Retake is now Reassign. See Terminology and Vocabulary Changes for more information.
