Gamification, Leaderboards, and Badges - 101

Gamification is a great way to appeal to the learners competitive spirit. Getting points on the leaderboards, or badges when completing training and events, gives learners something to strive for and a way to track their accomplishments in the academy.

The module needs to be turned on in the Academy Settings first.

Games and Leaderboards

Games are small tasks you can set up to learners and instructors to earn points. For example, you can give points for completing courses and curricula, enrolling in courses and curricula, watching the lectures in courses and curricula, etc.

If you turn on Leaderboards, users can also see how they rank. Leaderboards can be set up for the entire company, or for a subset of the company - allowing users in the same department to compete against each other.

Games also allow users to earn badges. Multiple levels can be set up, which then can award a badge upon completion of the level when the user earns enough points towards this activity

Leaderboards: Frequently Asked Questions

Note: After creating a leaderboard, it is always active. When you set the leaderboard to inactive, it still calculates points - users won't be able to see the leaderboard. This means that if you want a monthly leaderboard, you would need to create a new one for this purpose.

Badges

Badges cannot only be earned by leveling up in games, but also through actions that have a badge connected to them, or they can be awarded by a manager. Badges are small icons that show the user completed a certain task or has a certain amount of knowledge.
